This is an old post moved over from Livejournal.

Chaparral Lillies
We saw these lovely Chaparral Lillies when hiking last weekend in the mountains near Weitchpec. They were sooooo pretty!

We also saw a *very* large black bear. We'd been driving along a mountain road when we spotted him ahead of us. We coasted along behind him as he walked up the road until the car nearly stopped. Scott had to put the engine back in gear and that caused the bear to turn off the road into the trees. We were just behind him and the woods there were not very thick, but he still managed to disappear instantly.

Soon after we saw a bobcat bound across the road and head into the woods. We only saw him long enough to register the size (beagle sized), the shape (large rear end and bobbed tail) and color (sort of an orangish-brown) and he was gone.

We also found a nice lake to camp at. It looks like no one ever goes there since it is near Fish Lake which is very popular. While walking around the lake, we heard lots of frogs. We also found an old abandoned coat that was home to a large, fat Western Fence Lizard. Scott caught him after disturbing his plastic home so we could have a good look. He had a bright blue chin and belly and a very unpleasant disposition. Were he six feet instead of six inches, he'd have gladly eaten us for supper.
